Just like in the play, Ancient Athens laws did not give much status to women. They were only allowed outside the house when their fathers or husbands, depending on whether they were married or not. Marriage was decided between the father of the to-be bride, the to-be groom and his family. Women were not allowed to mingle with other men, including their brothers, uncles and nephews.
The commoners had a very mingling lifestyle (men) especially in the town squares and courtyards.
Slaves occupied a large part of the population and had a hard life, similar to those of Egyptian slaves. This could be because of the Greek influence in Egypt and vice - versa.
When a girl was born, the family announced her birth by pinning some sheep’s wool to their front door. This is seen as a symbol of the female’s life of domestic work. Some girls were lucky that their families wanted then even though they were born a girl. Some babies were left in a public place where anyone can pick them up or adopt them as slaves.
When a boy was born, the family announced the birth by pinning olive leaves to our front door.
For them, olive leaves represent success and victory. Olive leaves are a good symbol for the birth of a son because boys are expected to achieve more than girls.
